‘Dictionary 01’ by Rebecca Coles is an intricately made wall piece, featuring hundreds of hand-cut butterflies crafted from Chinese Seal Dictionaries. Originally exhibited in Hong Kong, the butterflies in this piece are each painted with gold gild enamel, strikingly illuminated against the deep black background, and symbolic of good luck, prosperity, and happiness.
Pinned to the board with entomology pins, and framed in a black box frame, glazed with AR glass, the butterflies of ‘Dictionary 01’ reimagine the practice of entomological cataloguing and display, with Rebecca dissecting and recycling existing materials to create organic yet decorative forms – a process which is truly a labour of love.
