‘Ruby Garden’ by Sumiko Seki is an original oil on canvas painting, which draws on the symbols of Japanese art to portray the transience of life through nature. 

Echoing traditional kimono design, which often holds multiple layers of meaning, Sumiko’s flowers are symbolic of human traits. The delphiniums in ‘Ruby Garden’, for instance, are often thought to symbolise big-heartedness, dignity, and grace.

Sumiko’s calligraphy training in Japan is highlighted in ‘Ruby Garden’, directly informing the thick impasto brushstrokes of the painting.
