This is the Miniforms Soda Oval coffee table by Yiannis Ghikas which is made from hand blown glass by Italian brand Miniforms, part of the Soda collection, the original Soda round table has won an amazing six design awards - see related products.
Soda was born in a Murano furnace where each table is blown, drawn-out and shaped by three master glass-makers. They are equipped with a complex system of burners to keep the same temperature throughout the mould, which is essential to give a hammered feeling to the texture.
The end result is an oval table consisting of a single volume of glass with two large petals forming the stem. Smooth as a surfboard, the oval shape evokes the fluidity of 1950s French design, but with Miniforms bold voice. On its own it is enchanting, but in compositions it reveals its playful side, breaking up the inertia of more basic forms.
